Acne Treatment with Antibiotics

Acne is more widespread among teenagers because at this age the level of some hormones increases in the organism. The increased amount of androgen in the organism results in the higher production of oil by glands. Oil can turn into sebum which provokes bacteria growth and onset of pimples. Nowadays there are numerous treatment options for acne and one of them consists in antibiotic therapy.

At mild stages of this illness most people first try to eliminate visual symptoms using local treatments before they decide to visit a dermatologist. Antibiotics for acne fulfil many functions but their main work is to decrease bacteria around the follicle. Besides, they also help blood cells to dispose of the chemical which provokes irritation. Furthermore, antibiotics diminish the amount of aliphatic acids in the sebum thus decreasing the inflammation. Some of the antibiotics used in acne treatment are listed below:

Clindamycin is used in bacterial infection treatment. Before prescribing this medication to you, your dermatologist should inquire whether you have any problems with kidney or liver, suffer from colitis, or have allergic responses to any medications. Your doctor should also ask you whether you are expecting a baby or suckling.

Doxycycline is prescribed when a patient is not sensitive to erythromycin or tetracycline or doesn’t tolerate the aforementioned antibiotics. At the beginning of treatment it is recommended to take 50 – 100 mg. of Doxycycline bis in day. The antibiotic should be used after having a meal otherwise a patient may feel sick. Doxycycline can lead to the increased sensitivity of the skin to the sun. Besides acne treatment, this medicine is also effective in treatment of some STDs, Lyme disease, and malaria.

Minocycline is an antibiotic which is very popular in acne treatment. It is generally ordered to patients who suffer from pustular eruptions. This medicine can lead to changes in pigmentation, nausea, giddiness, vomiting, or tooth discoloration. The changes in the teeth and skin color can result from long-lasting intake of the antibiotic.

Erythromycin is one of the most frequently used antibiotics. This medicine comprises anti-inflammatory components that diminish the reddening in lesions and has bactericidal effect. Erythromycin must be used together with food. The dosage may be different depending on the stage and type of the problem. The commonly ordered dosage is 250 – 500 mg. two times a day. Erythromycin may cause nausea or indigestion but its advantage is that it can be taken during the period of gestation.

Tetracycline is also a very popular remedy for acne treatment. The dosage of this antibiotic may vary, however in most cases it is 500 mg. bis in day. The treatment should last until any significant changes are registered. If there are improvements in the lesions, you can decrease the dosage to 250 mg. two times a day or stop the treatment at all. In contrast to other antibiotics, tetracycline must be used on an empty stomach in order to get maximum effect. Expectant mothers and children under 9 should not use this antibiotic.

All antibiotics for the treatment of acne cause vaginal candidiasis to women. Besides, oral antibiotics reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
